1. Policy Statement

Hampshire Drum School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults who attend our lessons. We recognise our duty of care and responsibilities under:

2. Scope
​
This policy applies to all Hampshire Drum School staff, contractors, and volunteers, in both in-person and online lessons. It covers:

Young people

Vulnerable adults
3. Responsibilities
​

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Mr Samuel David Sanders, Principal Teacher – responsible for handling safeguarding concerns and liaising with statutory agencies.

All staff/instructors must:
-
Complete safeguarding awareness training.
-
Report concerns immediately to the DSL.
-
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
-
4. Safer Recruitment & Training

All tutors delivering lessons to under-18s will hold an enhanced DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service).

References will be taken up for new staff.

Safeguarding training is provided to ensure awareness of responsibilities.
5. Code of Conduct for Lessons
​
In-Person Lessons
-
Lessons will take place in appropriate settings (e.g. studio, school, or home with parental presence nearby).

Parents/guardians are welcome to observe lessons.
-
Physical contact will only occur where absolutely necessary for musical instruction (e.g. correcting posture), and only with consent.

Online Lessons
-
A parent/guardian must be aware of and approve online tuition for under-18s.

Sessions should be conducted in a suitable space (not bedrooms).

Lessons will not be recorded without explicit written consent.
6. Recognising Abuse

Abuse may take the form of:

Physical abuse

Emotional abuse
-
Sexual abuse
-
Neglect
​​
Staff are trained to remain alert to signs of abuse and to act promptly if they have concerns.
7. Reporting Concerns
​

Concerns must be reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

If a child is at immediate risk of harm, staff should contact 999.

The DSL may escalate concerns to:

Records of safeguarding concerns will be stored securely, in line with our Privacy Policy.
8. Information Sharing & Confidentiality

Information will only be shared with appropriate authorities on a need-to-know basis.

Personal data is handled in line with our Privacy Policy.

Students and parents will be informed if information is shared, unless doing so places a child at further risk.
9. Whistleblowing
​
We encourage all staff and students to raise safeguarding concerns without fear of repercussion. Whistleblowing procedures will be followed to protect both the reporter and the child.
10. Review of Policy
​
This policy will be reviewed annually, or sooner if legislation or guidance changes. Updates will be approved by the school management and communicated to staff, students, and parents.
